Relay for Life

This year Apopka Elementary teachers and staff will participate in the Relay for Life event at Wekiva School football field.  This event raises money for the American Cancer Society and awareness about all types of cancer prevention.  Loved ones who lost their battle with the fight against cancer will be recognized during a luminary event at night.  The event begins at 6:00 pm on Friday, April 11 and ends on Saturday around noon, April 12th.  Continuous walking around the track gives us time to chat with our families and colleagues. Students will also participate in the activities at the event. Many schools and businesses come and give back to our Apopka Community! Our theme is to Knock out Cancer with the Eye of the Tiger as our inspiration!
This will be our 9th year at the Relay for Life and our goal is to raise $2000.00.

Fire Victims Relief

One of our very own families suffered house and property damage due to a fire in the home. Our second grade teams partnered together and collected essentials for the family. They collected food, clothes and money. We even had a student setup a lemonade stand all on his own on order to help out.

5th Grade Shoe Drive

As part of our school’s vision to be a service to our community, the 5th grade team would like to do a service project of our own.  We would like to do a Shoe Drive.  After reading a story in the 5th grade reading book titled “One Pair of Shoes and A Lot of Good Souls”, where the characters fixed up donated shoes and took them to residents at a homeless shelter.  We thought it would benefit those less fortunate than us to have shoes that they may not be able to buy themselves.

We are asking all students to collect and gather shoes that are no longer being used but that are in good condition.  The students will then re-polish the shoes and/or replace the shoe laces to make them appear almost new.

If you have shoes that you and any other family member are no longer wearing and are in decent condition, please send them in with your child(ren).  We will begin this Shoe Drive in the next couple of weeks and will run it through the end of the school year.  If you would also like to donate assorted colors of shoe polish and shoe strings that would be greatly appreciated.  We are also collecting other articles of clothing that are in good condition including shirts, jackets, pants, etc., as these items are in need as well.

Can and a Quarter Food Drive

Students and staff participated in our annual “Can & a Quarter” food drive.   This event was sponsored by Apopka Elementary Student Council. Brown paper sacks with an attached note explaining the food drive were sent home with each student asking them to donate at least one can and one quarter.  The monies and cans collected were used to fill decorated food baskets for our less fortunate families last Thanksgiving.  We served approximately 30 families last year with a complete holiday dinner!

Apopka Elementary students participated in Hat Day to benefit the American Cancer Society.  Each child donated $0.50 to the charity.  The payoff was getting to wear their favorite hat to school for the entire day!

Books for Babies

The Literacy Team was excited to announce their service project, “Books for Babies.”  They wanted to encourage our children to share the excitement and joy of reading with their new baby brother or sister.  Any student who had a baby less than 1 year of age at home was able to select a book to read with the new baby. This book became a special addition to the baby’s personal library, and to the family’s enjoyment of reading together.    A flyer was sent home so the parents could tell us about the new baby.  We hope we encouraged all of our future Dolphins to become life long readers.

Angel Tree

The Angel Tree is an annual event that helps families during the holidays.  Each family who needed support with toys and clothing received gifts for their children.  Gifts were donated by the teachers and staff at Apopka Elementary School.  They wrapped the gifts making them extra special for the families!  Many business partners also donated items for our students and their families.

XL 106.7 Baby DJ project

The 4th grade students at Apopka Elementary brought in unused, unwrapped toys for all ages. These toys were then donated to the XL 106.7 Baby DJ project to help support thousands of children and families in Central Florida that were in need of a wonderful Christmas holiday.
This fabulous service is provided by Johnny and Jayde in the Morning.
